The Mount Sinai School of Medicine is internationally recognized for its strength in research and teaching. In the U.S. News and World Report's medical school research ranked 18, primary care ranked 39, geriatrics ranked 1; each professor received the average NIH research funding ranked No. 2 in the U.S. Mount Sinai School of Medicine is the originator of the United States teaching hospitals, the largest and longest-established teaching hospitals. Located in Manhattan, New York, just four blocks from Central Park, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine's degrees were awarded by the City University of New York until 2000, when it was changed to a unit affiliated with New York University, but independent of, and not merged with, NYU's own medical school. A Mount Sinai-NYU Medical Center and Health System was established.
