Santa Fe College was established by the State Legislature in 1965 as a "community college college" to provide a broad range of quality higher education to the citizens of Alachua and Bradford Counties. Community colleges are a uniquely American creation. In the decade between 1957 and 1967, the Florida Legislature created a system of 28 community colleges throughout the state. They were located within commuting distance of 99 percent of the state's population to ensure that Floridians had access to affordable higher education. Since its inception, Santa Fe College has been committed to innovation in educational opportunity, responsiveness to the community, economic development and the public interest.

In its first 50 years, Santa Fe College has grown from a small community college of 1,000 students to a robust four-year college that offers rich and diverse educational opportunities to more than 22,000 people annually at seven campus sites and online. There are 786 full-time employees, 214 of whom are members of the college. There are also 676 part-time employees. The annual operating budget exceeds $82 million.

Santa Fe College was recently honored with the 2015 Aspen Award for Excellence in Community Colleges as the #1 ranked community college in the country. The college has been ranked in the top 10 community colleges in the U.S. since 2012.
