School Introduction

Eckerd College is a private American university founded in 1958 and belongs to an institution of higher learning with a focus on humanities. The school is located in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is a small, four-year, undergraduate institution of higher learning with approximately 2,000 students, including more than 300 international students from 39 countries. The college has been recognized as one of the nation's most respected colleges by the Princeton Review, a leading American educational review journal. The College has nearly 30 departments, including Anthropology, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Communication, Economics, and Mathematics, and currently enrolls nearly 2,000 students, including more than 80 international students from more than 37 countries around the world.

Eckerd College's campus is adjacent to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico in a peaceful, vegetated environment. Students feel very safe in a suburban environment with easy access to the cultural, social and recreational resources of downtown Tampa Bay. The school has small class sizes and encourages independent study and study abroad. Nearly all students live on campus, thus creating a collegial spirit. Students enjoy a great deal of freedom in their social life and in the design of their own curriculum. Volunteerism is extensive and their honor code encourages students to be "givers" rather than "takers".

Eckerd College awards baccalaureate degrees. Students who are academically inclined may pursue flexible schedules, early graduation, individualized majors, honors programs, dual degrees, independent study, challenging projects, and membership in the International Honor Society for Science and Engineering Studies (sigma xi). Special programs include internships, summer credit courses, off-campus research, study abroad, and U.S. Army and Air Force Reserve officer training.
